Thirty-four regional artists are displaying their interpretations of many diverse aspects of Colorado in this judged show with a total of 87 works of art. Many of our artists' primary residences are in other states, but they call Huerfano County their home for at least part of the summer. Others hail from Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Trinidad, and Aguilar. The judge for the show was Pueblo artist Nathan Solano. Five of Solano’s oil paintings are included in the show. Although his paintings reflect a variety of subjects from landscapes to sports-figures, he is popularly known for his cowboy paintings and Native American subject matter. His western paintings depict the drive and physical essence that moves the figures through their daily life’s work. Solano loves horseback riding and spends time doing just that, taking reference photos, at the Chico Basin Ranch. He works quickly and boldly, painting what he sees with his own energetic style. Solano's work is esteemed in businesses, homes and galleries across the United States, and is included in the personal collections of several television and movie personalities. Among other publications, his work has been featured on the cover of "Taos Magazine” in August of 1997. Solano has been commissioned to paint several National League football players and has done work for the Air Force Academy football program. Several members, artists, and art appreciators enjoyed watching Solano paint during his demonstration Sunday July 9, following the judging. Winners of the Judge's Choice awards are: J. Burke-Sheehan, Sheigla Hartman, Kathy Hill, Edward McCarthy, Pat Poer, La Claire Skaggs, and Rick Smith. Honorable Mention ribbons were also given to Annie Enke and Kathy Hill. |
