JEAN LATKA

We are pleased to have nationally known, Southern Colorado clay artist, Jean Latka as the juror of the Clay Continuum Exhibition.

Jean Latka has been a professional artist for more than thirty years. The functional world of pottery remains a major component of Jean’s career and expression, along with expansion into the world of fused glass. Jean and husband Tom have completed a long list of impressive public art projects. Jean is also the business manager, advertising and marketing director, and gallery coordinator for LATKA STUDIOS as well as Co-author of the book, Ceramic Extruding Tom and Jean Latka, Krause Publication.

"I love the smell of clay. I love the way it feels. And, it's also very forgiving. If I screw up and I haven't put it in the kiln yet, I can just thrw it in a bucket of water and I can start all over again.

This is a very labor intensive business. Clay is so responsive. I spend a lot of time with porcelain working to create a 'contrived non-chalance.' Like Chinese calligraphers, their art is studied for years and years; however, it looks so easy."

LATKA STUDIOS
Latka Studios is the creative endeavor of Tom and Jean Latka who, for the past thirty years, have used concrete, steel, ceramics, and fused glass as the vehicle of their artistic gestures and statements. Their pieces, both sculptural and functional, attempt to enliven community spaces; to bring a sense of vitality and human connection to urban development through the presence of color, texture and design.
