Enjoy a Saturday exploring portrait drawing in pastel media. All levels of artists are encouraged to participate. Participants will learn the basics of creating pastel portraits and develop their existing portraiture skills. Layering, color mixing, and color theory relative to portraiture will be taught from direct observation using a live model as a subject.
Accomplished artist and professor of art Vilas Tonape is offering a one-day Pastel Portraiture workshop at SPACe on Saturday, July 11, from 9 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm. A native of India, Vilas Tonape is an internationally recognized artist and a teacher – a professor at Trinidad State Junior College, Trinidad, Colorado. He has been a practicing artist for more than two decades. He received his BFA in Drawing and Painting with distinction from the Sir J.J. School of Art, University of Bombay (India). He earned an MFA in Painting from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. His work has been exhibited internationally, including venues in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Ontario and Bombay. Palm Beach Post says: “Tonape’s painting can be described as classically inspired, contemporary-realism— interpretive images that enchant the eye”.
Here are a few of his pastel portraits. Tonape’s portrait “Drunk Detective” is now on display as part of the Colorado! show at SPACe as well as several portraits in watercolor and oil. The “Drunk Detective” was selected for inclusion in the 26th IAPS Juried Exhibition in Albuquerque this year, as part of the biennial convention of the International Association of Pastel Societies.
Supplies must be provided by the participants. The following is a suggested supply list:
A portfolio folder to carry drawing papers (optional)
Felt Gray (or Steel Gray, if Felt Gray is not available) shade, 19 x 25 inch,Canson Mi-Teintes pastel drawing paper or any other brand is also fine (about 3 sheets for each participant)
Drawing board (preferably a simple masonite board) to hold 19 x 25 inch paper (SPACe has boards)
One roll of masking tape
Prismacolor brand NuPastel 36 Color Sets only (one box per participant)
Kneaded eraser (one piece per participant)
One HB, one 2B and one 4B charcoal pencils
One yardstick (cost 82 cents at Home Depot)
A tackle box like (art box) case to carry supplies (optional)
All fees are nonrefundable within 7 days of the workshop
If there are less than 4 people signed up within 7 days of the workshop, it may be cancelled 7 days prior to the scheduled start date, unless the instructor chooses otherwise. Students will be notified of the possibility of cancellation and payments will be refunded. SPACe is not responsible for accidents with materials being used in the workshop.
