Professional artist and educator Kenny Schneider will be showing his
new series of paintings based on the ex-voto theme. ” My last class at CSU-Pueblo was Latin American Art History. When we got to the 20th century we discovered that ‘ex-votos’ influenced Frida Khalo’s painting style. They were so interesting, for the final, I assigned each student to paint 3 ex-votos based on their own lives.
Kenny has completed these pieces using his autobiography as reference and are in the same spirit and genre
What are ex-votos?
When a person goes through a difficult situation and it is well done (perhaps miraculously), he paints one of these votive offerings and goes to the church to offer it as a token of gratitude.
In the votive offerings we can find all kinds of stories: people who overcame illnesses, family problems that were solved, accidents that did not cause deaths, find work, reunions between lovers, etc.
Traditional ex-votos are part of the Mexican culture , its beliefs and the roots of the Catholic religion in that country.
